Aesthetically pleasing and surprisingly accurate Galileo thermometers are the perfect gift for anyone seeking a unique and fascinating gift idea.

The Galileo thermometer is simple and accurate, named after Galileo Galilei, the famous 16th century scientist. Nowadays, they are mainly kept as interesting novelty items, however they are very functional thermometers, and also helpful in teaching children about measuring temperature.

The Galileo thermometer is by design a sealed glass tube, which is filled with liquid and a number of weights inside. The changing temperature causes a flux in the liquid density, which results in the weights rising and falling within the tube. The less dense weights usually rise toward the top, while the higher density weights lower toward to the bottom. You read the temperature by looking for the band between two set of weights, then average the temperature of the weights on each side of the band. Occasionally, a weight will be suspended in the center of the band. When this occurs, it reflects the current temperature.

Our beautifully designed Galileo thermometers come with the weights attached to brightly colored glass bubbles. These hand blown glass bubbles, while none are the exact same size and shape, are calibrated to have the same density as the liquid around them, ensuring the accuracy of the thermometer. Attached to each bubble is a metal tag, displaying the various degree numbers. These are the actual calibrated counterweights, each slightly different from the other.
