We have an array of ornate radiometers to choose from. Some are hanging, some are standing.
Our radiometers are beautiful glass bulbs, some colored, some clear, but all have the air removed from them to create a partial vacuum. The spindles inside our radiometers hold vanes that are white or polished on one side, and black on the other side. The vanes react to light, either sunlight or artificial light, or infrared radiation (even heat from a nearby hand), causing them to rotate. As they cool, when light is taken away from them, they rotate in the opposite direction. This occurs because the light or radiation is reflected by the white polished sides of the vanes and it is absorbed by the black sides, which raises the temperature of the surface of the vanes. The air near the black sides becomes warmer and therefore exerts greater pressure on that side of the vane than on the reflecting side.
Many people enjoy having a radiometer as a novelty ornament. We carry hanging radiometers, as well as standing ones for you to choose from.
Radiometers make great gifts. They are unique and make wonderful conversation pieces. Radiometers are perfect to give at corporate events as a corporate gift, because they are unusual and show thoughtfulness on the part of the giver. They also make great children's gifts, because of their unique and fascinating structure. Most children are fascinated by them and how they work.
